Calabar High closed due to rat infestation

The entire student population of the Calabar High School on Red Hills Road in St. Andrew has been sent home until next week as the institution has been closed due to a major rat infestation.

Classes at the prominent boys' school were suspended Wednesday after the situation worsened and became a public health issue. The 1800 students were told that the school would remain closed for three days and classes should resume on Monday. The Ministry of Education confirmed the closure on Wednesday night.

Permanent Secretary, Grace McLean, explained that the situation was not caused by poor sanitary conditions at the school. According to Miss McLean, the rodents migrated from neighbouring properties including private residences and the institution became infested. She said following consultation the administration of Calabar decided to close the school and call in the exterminators.  Miss McLean said that adjustments will be made to the academic year at Calabar to recover the three days of classes:
