Arrangements are being made for the deployment of a team from Jamaica to assist with recovery efforts in the Turks and Caicos Islands which suffered wide scale damage on Thursday while being pounded by Hurricane Irma.
The team could leave as early as Friday, but certainly by Saturday, and will also provide assistance in the Bahamas.
“Most of the team members, I’ve been advised, are prepared to depart but we’re working now on the procurement of supplies to accompany the team as well,” Ronald Jackson, Head of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) explained Thursday on RJR’s Beyond the Headlines.
BVI
A 35 member team from CDEMA has already arrived in Antigua.
Most of the members will head to the British Virgin Islands. There they will conduct relief operations as well as assist with rapid assessment of the damage caused by Irma.
“Based on the findings in the British Virgin Islands from the teams that go in, we will then be able to get better particulars on what… we may need to bring in and in quantities,” Jackson said.
Much of the supplies for the BVI will be taken from CDEMA’s sub-regional warehouse in Antigua.
Jackson said that a small team will also be deployed to Anguilla.
Meanwhile, some Jamaicans in the British Virgin Islands are appealing for assistance to be transported out of the country.
