Dr. Clifton Reid, Interim Chairman of the Manchester Peace Coalition, has expressed concern that the current strategies to tackle the lottery scam will not be effective.
Dr. Reid contends that there is greater need to understand the causes and attitudes towards lottery scamming.
Speaking Tuesday morning at the peace coalition's launch in Mandeville, Dr. Reid said, while some Jamaicans view scamming as a scourge, others who may suddenly be able to afford daily necessities like food, with funds gained from scamming, might view it as a blessing instead.
As a result, Dr. Reid said Jamaica runs the risk of prescribing the wrong medicine for the situation.
"If we don't get the particular understanding - the difference between one Jamaica and the other perspective of another Jamaica - you might be putting forward solutions to a problem that might not work because we are lacking that particular understanding," he asserted.
Dr. Reid also expressed concern that young persons are aspiring to become lottery scammers. He said he is worried about what this will mean for the country's future.
Fifteen communities, identified by the police as crime hot spots, are being targeted by the group for special interventions.
