Dorothy Pine McLarty is new ECJ Chairman

Dorothy Pine Lclarty is reportedly the the new Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ). The selection is said to have taken place during a meeting of the ECJ on Wednesday.

The change in chairmanship follows the resignation of Dr. Herbert Thompson in the wake of his acceptance of an award from the People's National Party, on behalf behalf of the ECJ, but without having discussed it with the other members of the body before going to the function to accept the award.

In another development on Wednesday, the ECJ distanced itself from comments attributed to Dr. Thompson in the press, reportedly suggesting Parliament is trying to destroy the Commission.
The ECJ said it noted and welcomed the fact that on september 24, 2013 Parliament approved the report on campaign financing and referred the matter to Cabinet for drafting instructions to be issued to the Chief Parliamentary Counsel and then back to Parliament for passage.

That declaration by the ECJ has resulted in more pressure being brought to bear on Dr. Thompson to resign from the Commission. Audley Shaw, a contender for the leadership of the opposition Jamaica Labour Party, issued a statement on Wednesday evening, repeating his call for the full resignation of Dr. Thompson from the Commission.

Mr. Shaw said the comments attributed to Dr. Thompson on Wednesday were further evidence that his position on the ECJ "is now even more untenable and he has no further option but to resign or be removed by the Governor General."
