Enough table eggs to meet Christmas demand, says Agriculture Minister

Agriculture Minister Floyd Green says there are enough table eggs to meet the demand for the Christmas holidays.

Minister Green says there has been a downturn in the supply of eggs due weather events which have negatively affected production.

Following Hurricane Beryl in July, Minister Green said small poultry farmers were severely hit, with 43,000 layer birds and 278,000 broilers being lost.

This led to some retailers limiting the number of eggs that shoppers can purchase.

Speaking with Radio Jamaica News in St. Ann recently, Mr. Green said the ministry has intervened to ensure adequate supply for consumers.

"We are working, especially with our bakeries, to ensure that they will have adequate supply of liquid egg. And once they have adequate supply of liquid egg, then it will take off some of the pressure from the supermarkets in relation to the table eggs. So...there is a downturn in supply, but we will have sufficient to carry us through the Christmas season," he said.
