Mayor Richard Vernon, Chairman of the St. James Municipal Corporation
The St. James Municipal Corporation is threatening legal action against telecommunication providers, which have failed to remove dangling wires left behind after restoration work following Hurricane Melissa.
Mayor of Montego Bay, Richard Vernon, says the Chief Executive Officer has written to the companies repeatedly demanding swift action to clear the hazardous clutter.
"Our words have been met with sluggish action. Let me make our position crystal clear this evening. The public space belongs to citizens, not to corporate negligence. The St. James Municipal Corporation will tolerate this risk no longer. If these lines are not safely cleared or bundled immediately, we will be taking aggressive further steps, including legal action, because we must do this to protect the lives and livelihoods of our residents," he declared.
Mayor Vernon was speaking Thursday at the 2026 City Hall Municipal Budget Presentation.
