The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) says since the start of the year, over 50 persons have been arrested in the parishes of St Elizabeth and Manchester for electricity theft.
Ava Tomlin, manager for both parishes, told the St Elizabeth Parish Council at its monthly meeting on Friday that 46 individuals were arrested in Manchester, while 6 arrests were made in St Elizabeth.
Last month, the JPS removed over 500 throw-ups which resulted in the company recovering 16 megawatts of electricity, estimated to cost approximately J$4 million .
She said while the JPS is trying to decrease the theft of electricity, it is also concerned about the theft of street lights and the company continues to look at a long term plan to deal with these challenges.
