Five gov't entities yet to be cleared for December salary payment

By Halshane Burke

Five government ministries, departments or agencies (MDAs) are yet to be cleared for the release of payment by the Accountant General's Department.

Speaking in a press conference this morning, Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Dr. Nigel Clarke, said the situation should be resolved by 5 o'clock this afternoon.

Dr. Clarke says 47 of 52 MDAs have so far been cleared for payment of salaries to be made and this process is being executed.

But he said quality control procedures are still ongoing for the remaining five entities.

The five agencies that are impacted are Bellevue Hospital, the Western Regional Health Authority, Southern Regional Health Authority, the Houses of Parliament and Administrative Staff at the Ministry of Education.

Dr. Clarke said in one agency, the payroll system is not able to calculate the arrears. That system will need to be amended, he noted, adding that employees in the entity have been notified and have "indicated their understanding and agreement" that the December payment will be made today and the arrears payment made at a later date.

The minister said this particular case affects 183 employees.
