Geopolitical tensions elsewhere affecting Jamaican economy - Holness

Prime Minister Andrew Holness observed on Monday that geopolitical tensions in other regions have negatively affected the Jamaican economy and heightened frustration among voters.

Speaking in an interview with US based news network, Bloomberg TV, Mr. Holness explained that Jamaica, like any other country has been affected by events in other territories such as the Ukraine/Russia war.

"The impact is significant, primarily in cost of living and inflation," he said, conceding that this has led to "the frustration of the electorate, even disillusionment."

He added that, even as Jamaica confronts these challenges, its economic performance continues to improve, characterising it as "counter intuitive and running counter to what is happening in the rest of the world."

In that regard, he noted that the country's debt rose with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, "but then we managed to bring it back down; our inflation went up to as high as 11 per cent (but) I'm happy to say that (at) the last outturn we we're at 5.8 (per cent); we are within our target band."
