Jamaica is still some way off from removing the British Monarch as Head of State and becoming a republic, according to Minister of Legal & Constitutional Affairs Marlene Malahoo Forte.
The minister conceded this reality while responding to questions during Tuesday's meeting of the Standing Finance Committee of Parliament.
She said, while constitutional reform is the broad objective for the ministry, the removal of the British monarch is only the first phase, adding that, while the ground work is well underway, the legislation is not expected to be passed before the end of this year.
A report of the recommendations is still being prepared for submission to Cabinet and Parliament.
She explained that enacting the laws guiding the change to a republic includes months of wait time.
