A Jamaican is among four Caribbean
nationals who have been honoured by the Trinidadian government.
The four received awards for their work in the fields of art, science and technology and the environment.
Co-founder of Children First, Claudette Richardson-Pious and Guyanese Annette Arjoon were awarded the Anthony N. Sabga Caribbean Award for Excellence.
Both women were named joint winners in the field of Public and Civic contributions.
Professor David Dabydeen of Guyana has been recognised for his work in the field of the Arts and Barbadian James Husbands was honoured for his work in the field of Science and Technology.
Mrs. Richardson-Pious is a former drama teacher who co-founded Children First in 1997.
The organization, the largest of its kind in Jamaica, is dedicated to taking children off the streets.
It also provides HIV/AIDS testing and counselling to rural youth.
The 2008 laureates will be given their prizes in a gala ceremony in Trinidad and Tobago on April 12.
Each person will receive a gold medal, a citation and US$80,000.
The awards were established in 2005, honouring Anthony N. Sabga, chairman of the ANSA McAL Group, a leading Caribbean conglomerate with more than 50 trading companies.
