J’can man shoots & kills J’can woman in NY

A Jamaican man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old Jamaican woman, at a birthday party on the weekend, in Queens, New York.

Twenty-three year-old Mairs O'Neil turned himself in to the police early Monday morning and is awaiting arraignment on charges of second-degree murder and weapons possession.

Mr. O'Neil is accused of fatally shooting 26-year-old Avalisa Morris, just after 4:00a.m. on Sunday.

According to District Attorney Richard Brown, Miss Morris was hosting a surprise party at a house on 119th Road in St. Albans when Mr. O'Neil began arguing with someone at the party.

They were asked to leave however, the tow reportedly returned to the location and shots were fired through the closed door – hitting Miss Morris in the head.

She died at the scene.

Mr. O'Neil and the other person fled the location.

Relatives say Miss Morris, who worked at a bank, was generous and always a peacemaker.

Family members say her body will most likely be returned to her native Jamaica for burial.

If convicted, Mr. O'Neil faces up to 25 years to life, in prison.
