A report from Karen Madden
The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) is yet to finalise a coaching staff for both the national senior men's and national senior women's football teams.
The situation exists while both the Reggae Girlz and the Reggae Boyz should be preparing to contest major tournaments next year.
After finishing third at the CONCACAF championships earlier this month, the Reggae Girlz qualified for the 2023 World Cup as well as the Confederation playoff for a place in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. They were guided to those historic achievements by Lorne Donaldson, who signed an interim contract with the JFF, which expired the day after the CONCACAF championships ended.
At the end of the tournament, both Donaldson and JFF President Michael Ricketts indicated a willingness to re-engage in order for a seamless transition ahead of the World Cup.
However, when Radio Jamaica Sports caught up with Donaldson on Thursday, he said no contact had been made either with him or the other members of the coaching staff, which took the Reggae Girlz to the CONCACAF tournament.
According to the FIFA website, there are international windows in August, October and November of this year.
The FIFA Women's World Cup is scheduled for July 20 to August 20, 2023 in New Zealand and Australia, while the Olympic playoff is expected to be held in September of next year.
Meanwhile, the Reggae Boyz are also without a coach after former national Paul Hall’s interim contract also expired.
Radio Jamaica Sports contacted head of the JFF Technical Committee Rudolph Speid, who revealed that negotiations are continuing with Hall, who resides in England.
Speid, who is on a visit to England, informed us that he had held several meetings with Hall’s agent in a bid to iron out a contract.
But Speid, who is also technical director at Cavalier Football Club, insisted that there is nothing unusual about the current state of affairs.
The Reggae Boyz, who crashed out of contention for the 2022 World Cup, will contest the four-team tournament in Austria next month. They also have the CONCACAF Nations League and the CONCACAF Gold Cup next year.
