The Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) has given the Ministry of Finance until Friday to present an improved wage offer for teachers.
The JTA says it cannot guarantee normality within the education system if the ministry fails to provide a better offer.
In a letter shared with Finance Minister Fayval Williams on Wednesday, the JTA expressed disappointment and mounting frustration at the delay in presenting an improved offer on the salaries and conditions of service for public sector teachers.
The JTA says the mood among teachers is one of rising militancy and they are prepared to defend their rights and professional dignity.
As such, it wants the Finance Minister to immediately present an improved offer on salaries and conditions of service that reflects the value, professionalism and sacrifices of Jamaica's educators.
It also wants the minister to convene a meeting no later than Friday to resume negotiations in earnest.
The JTA says the government's ongoing delay is a clear affront to the teaching profession and a disservice to the nation's students.
