JUTC still plagued by pilferage

JUTC Managing Director Paul Abrahams

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) has admitted failure in curbing the long standing problem of theft of fuel and other illicit activities in its operations and says this is causing it to rack up hefty losses.

JUTC Managing Director Paul Abrahams on Wednesday told Parliament's Public Administration and Appropriations Committee (PAAC) that the problem has been compounded by collusion at the state-run entity.

He said the JUTC's large structure is also making it difficult to clampdown on pilferage or to quantify it, however, the company has a "pretty good idea that there is a substantial figure out there".

The JUTC is projected to suffer $8 billion in losses this fiscal year.
