Miss Universe Jamaica 2015 files suit against pageant organisers

A legal battle is looming between the winner of the 2015 Miss Universe Jamaica competition, Sharlene Rädlein and the organisers of the competition. Ms. Rädlein is seeking millions of dollars in damages.

Lawyers representing the Miss Universe Jamaica winner have filed a lawsuit accusing the organisers of failing to pay over the prize money due to her. The lawsuit was filed on July 20.

Mark McDermoth and Karl Williams, the managers of the Miss Universe Jamaica Franchise and Uzuri International Designs, the registered holder of the Miss Universe franchise, have been sued as defendants.

In court documents, the attorneys argued that on July 15, last year, the defendants in operating and managing the local Miss Universe competition had contracted to award a prize package valued at more than $4 million in cash to the winner.

According to the court documents, Ms. Rädlein was due to receive 12 equal monthly installments of her cash prize, to be paid on the 25th of each month. However, from January to present, she has not been paid.

In additional to the cash, the lawyers added that the winner was promised a scholarship at the New York Film Academy; a Diamond watch courtesy of Diamond International; eye care products from Eye Q Optical; one year travel insurance from Axia and spa treatment among other things.

Ms. Rädlein  and her attorneys have accused the Miss Universe organisers of breaching the contract by failing to pay over to her the sums due on account of the cash prize portion.

They added that the organisers have also failed to honour the agreement to provide Ms. Rädlein with the scholarship, eye care products and the spa treatment.

According to the attorneys, the organisers unlawfully and without just cause denied the Miss Universe winner the cash prize in full; failed and or refused to pay the full cash prize to the Miss Universe winner.

They also claimed that Ms. Rädlein has been denied her entitlement as the Title Winner of the 2015 Miss Universe competition.
