MOCA recovers billions of dollars from forfeited assests

Kamina Johnson Smith, Leader of Government Business in the Senate

The Major Organised Crime and Anti Corruption Agency (MOCA) has been successful in recovering billions of dollars from the forfeiture of assets and cash from people convicted of drug trafficking, fraud and other crimes.

This was revealed in the Senate on Friday by Leader of Government Business Kamina Johnson Smith during debate on amendments to the first schedule of the MOCA Act, which seeks to give the anti-corruption agency more powers to investigate offences such as simple larceny, praedial larceny and breaches of the Fisheries Act.

"Let me say billions of US and Jamaican dollars. I mean, the forfeited bank accounts amounting to more than $282 million, $486 million, $154 billion worth of real property. Listen, if I were to go through, let's not even count the vehicles, cash and investments... They are overlapping because within the cases you may have 30 vehicles within one case. You may have 10 bank accounts within another. So, MOCA is focused on its work," said the senator.
