More than $100 million in rain damage at Serge Island farm

Ralston Bent, Operations Manager at the Serge Island Dairy farm in St. Thomas and Agriculture Minister Floyd Green

Damage to agricultural lands at the Serge Island Dairy farm in St. Thomas following the recent rains has so far been estimated at more than $100 million.

Operations Manager Ralston Bent made the disclosure on Friday during a tour of the farm.

Agriculture Minister Floyd Green was part of the tour.

Mr. Bent said the damage was extensive.

"In total, it's close to around 30 acres of improved land that we lost.... So, I mean, that's significant. This land won’t really come back for the purpose we're using it for," he lamented.

Minister Green noted that he expects the losses suffered by the agricultural sector following the rains to continue to rise.

He said the government is finalising plans to assist the affected farmers.

"So, what we're going to try and do now is quickly move forward to get that support to the farmers. We want to enjoy our farmers who need planting material, they get that planting material. They're back out, our farmers who would have lost livestock. We can see how quickly we can go through the process and get them back on their feet," he declared.
