More work needed on Spaldings Market probe - Arscott

The Local Government team which this week submitted a preliminary report on its probe into the construction of shops at the Spaldings Market may have to return to the Clarendon Parish Council to conduct further investigation.

Noel Arscott, Minister of Local Government, has confirmed receipt of the 40-page report. However, he said more work needs to be done by the team. As a result, Mr Arscott told RJR News that he was not able to commnet on what had been gathered so far. He said he expects that the updated report could be available by next week.

The investigative team is made up of senior officials of the Local Government Ministry. It was assembled on April 12 to collect all relevant information concerning the building of the shops, a matter which landed Richard Azan, Member of Parliament for North West Clarendon, in controversy.

The shops were built on property belonging to the Clarendon Parish Council, at the MP's expense, reportedly without planning permission from the Council. The controversy also extends to the collection and use of fees for use of the shops.

G2K requests progress report from OCG

And, the Jamaica Labour Party's youth affiliate, G2K, has written to the Contractor-General, Dirk Harrison, asking him to indicate the proposed date of completion and submission of his report on the Spalding Market probe.

Floyd Green, G2K President, has called for the Contractor-General to act in the interest of the public and set a reasonable time frame for the completion of the report. Mr. Green has also urged the Contractor-General to, in the future, advise the nation of projected deadlines to complete investigations and provide regular updates to the public on the progress of such probes.

Additionally, G2K has posed a number of questions to the Contractor-General regarding his office’s monitoring of the Government’s mega projects. It wants answers on steps being taken by the OCG to ensure that there is transparency, accountability and probity in the implementation of these projects.
