Motorists urged to avoid Spanish Town Road amid rehabilitation work

Assistant Commissioner of Police Dr. Gary McKenzie, head of the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch

Motorists using Spanish Town Road are being urged to use alternative routes due to the roadworks in the vicinity of the Sandy Gully Bridge.

The roadworks have resulted in a major pile of traffic along Mandela Highway, Spanish Town Road and Weymouth Drive since Tuesday.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said it has implemented a temporary traffic management system.

"So there is some amount of traffic on Spanish Town Road. And in fact, it has affected traffic going along Nelson Mandela Highway towards St. Catherine. And the reason for this is that rehabilitation work is being done on the bridge at Riverton City along Spanish Town Road where two of the lanes that in the easterly have been closed off.

"As a result of that, the police have been there since early trying to assist traffic. And one of the things that has been done is to divert traffic on the western side to circumvent that area. But what happens is that when traffic is not flowing consistently, then when we have breaks, we have delays. And that is what is happening," explained Assistant Commissioner of Police Dr. Gary McKenzie, head of the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch.

ACP McKenzie urged motorists to use alternative routes where possible, exercise caution and obey traffic directions while travelling through the area.
