National Heritage Trust to address theft of artefacts

    The Jamaica National Heritage Trust, is planning to use legislation to prevent the theft of valuable local artefacts by persons in the thriving scrap metal trade.

   Millions of dollars worth of items with rich cultural legacy, are being moved by the thieves, and the Trust wants to solve the problem.

   Under section 12 of the Jamaica National Heritage Trust Act, the entity can declare any structure a national monument in an effort to preserve it.

   Laleta Davis Mattis, the Trust's Executive Director is proposing to use the powers under the Act to declare items that are privately owned, in order to restrict their movement.
