Ninety-six farmworkers depart for Canada

Ninety-six farm workers, 12 of whom are first-timers, departed the island for Canada on Friday under the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Programme.

They will work in the provinces of Ontario and New Brunswick, supporting agricultural operations in locations such as Leamington, West Lorne, Thedford, Brantford, Northampton, Arkona and Delhi.

In his address at the send-off ceremony, at the Ministry of Labour & Social Security's Overseas Employment Centre in Kingston, the portfolio minister, Pearnel Charles Jr., said the recruits went through rigorous screening under the Leave No One Behind policy.

Minister Charles said the potential workers were assessed for numeracy and literacy and also underwent psychometric testing

He said successful candidates were approved for the programme while those who had challenges with reading and numeracy were referred to the HEART/NSTA Trust for remedial training.

This year marks the 59th anniversary of the Canadian programme.
