The National Water Commission (NWC) is warning restaurants and fast food establishments across the island that they will be sanctioned if they are found to be responsible for clogging the sewer system.
During this holiday season, the NWC is urging these establishments to properly maintain their grease traps to prevent fats, oils and grease from entering the system.
The NWC says when these materials build up in sewer lines, they can solidify and block the flow of wastewater leading to backups, overflows of property damage and environmental harm.
NWC Wastewater Manager Patrick Daley says frequency of sewer blockages points to poor waste disposal practices by some businesses.
He notes that this negligence is causing unnecessary disruptions and environmental concerns.
In response, the NWC says it has intensified island-wide inspections of restaurants and fast food outlets with a focus on the construction, use and maintenance of grease traps as well as the type of waste being discharged.
Businesses found to be non-compliant will face enforcement action.
Mr. Daley is urging operators to take immediate steps to clean and maintain their grease traps, stressing that it is both a regulatory requirement and a responsibility to protect the environment and their operations.
