Pedestrian walkway on May Pen Bridge closed due to safety concern

Mayor of May Pen Joel Williams

One of the pedestrian walkways on the May Pen Bridge in Clarendon has been closed because of safety concerns.

Mayor of May Pen, Joel Williams, says the decision to close the area follows a joint assessment of the infrastructure with the National Works Agency last week.

Mr. Williams made the announcement during the recent meeting of the Clarendon Municipal Corporation.

The compromised area has since been blocked off with caution tape.

The May Pen Bridge, which crosses the Rio Minho, is one of the principal entry points to the parish capital carrying thousands of motorists signed pedestrians daily.

Mr. Williams said it was residents who raised concern about the structural integrity of the walkway.

"While we continue to push the NWA (National Works Agency) for the commencement of repair works, we are also ensuring that residents are fully informed of the hazard. Public safety remain non-negotiable," he stressed.
