Pembroke Hall Primary suspends classes after watchman found murdered

Superintendent Damion Manderson, head of the St. Andrew South Police Division
By Kimone Witter

Classes at Pembroke Hall Primary School in St. Andrew were suspended Wednesday after students stumbled upon the lifeless body of the night watchman on the compound.

The deceased has been identified as 62-year-old Owen Mardner, otherwise called 'Chris', of a Waltham Park Road address.

Mr. Mardner's body had bullet wounds.

Superintendent Damion Manderson, head of the St. Andrew South Police Division, said residents heard explosions in the area about 10:30 Tuesday night but did not alert the police.

Students stumbled upon the body Wednesday morning when they arrived at school.

Superintendent Manderson said the police have not yet determined a motive for the attack, but "from all indications, [Mr. Mardner] would have been surprised and shot several times".

He said students and staff are traumatised and will receive counselling.
