PNP President Mark Golding
People's National Party (PNP) President Mark Golding is promising to restore the Office of the Political Ombudsman as an independent body should the party form the next government.
In 2024, the government used its majority in both Houses of Parliament to pass the Political Ombudsman Interim Amendment Act to integrate the office into the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ).
That merger came despite concerns by the parliamentary opposition and civil society groups, that it would result in ECJ commissioners directly engaging with partisan politics and would drag the highly respected entity into political disputes.
Mr. Golding says the office is needed as a referee, especially during heightened political seasons.
"We will restore the Office of the Political Ombudsman as an office that can look into hankey-pankey in electoral matters and bad conduct, and provide some recourse to all of those who are doing wrong things right now, tearing down people poster and other wrong things," he declared.
Mr. Golding was speaking Thursday evening in Musgrave Square, Brown's Town, St. Ann.
