Police search for driver of truck responsible for Spur Tree oil spill

By Kimone Witter

The police have launched a search for the driver of a truck responsible for a major oil spill along the Spur Tree Hill main road in Manchester this morning.

The spill triggered several motor vehicle crashes along the roadway.

Two members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force were among several people injured in separate crashes.

The police say there were six crashes involving seven vehicles.

The police service vehicle crashed into a utility pole, while another motorist became trapped in their vehicle and was removed by fire fighters.

The oil spill resulted in the road being closed for several hours from sometime after 6 a.m.

This caused a traffic snarl and significant delays for commuters, including scores of students en route to schools in Manchester and St Elizabeth.

Most of the traffic was diverted through Plowden in South Manchester.

The road has since been reopened.

Head of the St. Elizabeth Police Division, Acting Superintendent Coleridge Minto, says the Manchester, St. Elizabeth and Westmoreland police divisions are collaborating to locate the truck they believe spilled the oil along the roadway.
