Portmore councillors hold first meeting at new municipal corporation building

Leon Thomas and a resident of Waterford

Work continues on the new Portmore Municipal Corporation building in the vicinity of Braeton Parkway and Municipal Boulevard, however councillors held their first meeting at the location on Wednesday night.

It comes two years after councillors and administrative employees were slated to occupy the building.

Leon Thomas, Chairman of the Portmore Municipal Corporation, said six departments have been relocated to the new building.

For the first time in years, residents of the municipality were in attendance at the meeting of the municipal corporation.

Waterford resident Richard Lewis touted the new building as being "first class" and of "international standard".

A contract valued at $190 million was signed in 2017 for construction of the building. It was funded by the Local Government Ministry and the Portmore Municipal Corporation.

Mayor Thomas was unable to say how much of the $190 million has already been used. He is, however, hoping the remaining work, such as paving and the installation of an elevator, will be completed next month.

The building features a ground floor, first floor and attic floor, and has energy-efficient features such as solar street lighting and LED lighting.

The overall development plan also includes landscaping, adequate parking space and water harvesting.
