Prime Minister, Opposition Leader respond to the death of Pope Francis

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness and Opposition Leader Mark Golding have both responded to the death of Pope Francis.

Prime Minister Holness, in his message, expressed condolences to the Catholic community and Christians, generally, following the passing of the Pope.

He described Pope Francis as a champion and advocate for change who used his papacy to highlight issues of fairness, equity, climate change and more.

The Prime Minister said, being the first pontiff from Latin America, Pope Francis dedicated his life to uplifting the poor and vulnerable.

He said the Pope's quiet humility endeared millions to his style, to a deeper belief in God, and has influenced and touched the lives of millions across the world.

Mr Golding, in his response, said the Pope's life was a testament to spiritual devotion, moral clarity, and a tireless, progressive commitment to unity and human dignity.

He offered his heartfelt sympathies to the Catholic community across Jamaica, during this time of reflection and mourning.

He said Jamaican Catholics have contributed significantly to nation-building through education, health care, community service, and the arts, guided by the values and teachings of the Vatican.

Pope Francis died on Easter Monday at age 88.

The Vatican has released the Pope's cause of death as stroke and subsequent irreversible heart failure.
