School administrators and parents say the rural school bus should be assigned to more than one route in St. Thomas.
The rural school bus assigned to St. Thomas rolled out in the parish early Tuesday morning to transport students following Monday's no-show due to what Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) said was a mechanical defect.
The route SB-40 service operates from Albion via Morant Bay and ends in Pear Tree River.
But despite the unit being on time, several students refused to use the bus service.
And some school administrators say they were expecting that other routes would have been established across the parish to accommodate students in areas with unreliable public transportation.
Principal of Robert Lightbourne High in Trinityville, Ricardo Morgan, told Radio Jamaica News on Tuesday morning that the school has not received information on whether its students will benefit from the service.
Some parents who spoke with Radio Jamaica News questioned why only one unit has been assigned to St. Thomas while other parishes have received up to 10 buses.
They argue that while only 60 of a total 100 buses have been made available in the first phase of the rural school bus programme, the units should have been distributed more evenly across the targeted parishes.
Efforts to get a response from Transport Minister Daryl Vaz or the JUTC up to news time were unsuccessful.
