Sajid Javid named new British Home Secretary

Sajid Javid has been named the new British Home Secretary.

He replaced Amber Rudd who resigned on Sunday after she faced mounting criticism over her handling of the Windrush scandal and immigration policy.

Mr. Javid, the son of a Pakistani bus driver whose family went to the UK in the 1960s, had been Communities, Local Government and Housing Secretary.

He is the UK's first home secretary from an ethnic minority.

In an interview with the Sunday Telegraph, he said the Windrush scandal felt very personal to him coming from a family of immigrants.

As he arrived at the Home Office to start his new job Monday morning, Mr. Javid vowed to make sure people caught up in the Windrush debacle are treated with decency and fairness.

He added that he would look carefully at the government's immigration policy, although the Government has insisted that there are no plans to change direction on the issue.

Ms Rudd quit after she said she inadvertently misled Members of  Parliament over immigration removal targets.

Last week, Ms Rudd told the MPs the Home Office did not have targets for removing illegal immigrants.

However, on Sunday the Guardian published a letter in which Ms Rudd set out her ambitious but deliverable aim to deport 10 percent more illegal immigrants over the next few years.
