Dr. Alfred Dawes, Senior Medical Officer of Savanna-la-Mar Hospital
The administration of Savanna-la-Mar Hospital is on the hunt for more blood donors to replenish its rapidly depleting supply, due to the influx of victims of violence.
Dr. Alfred Dawes, Senior Medical Officer of the hospital, has appealed for assistance to save the facility from hitting a crisis.
Dr. Dawes confirmed that over the last few months, there has been an increase in the number of shooting victims at the facility, and this has taken a toll on its supply of blood.
He warned that the situation is approaching crisis level and an appeal for more blood is now a necessity.
"We are right now in what you could say is disaster mode because we are expecting more.... We have made some changes to the hospital, we have gotten additional beds to try and clear the A&E department in anticipation of the next rush. We hope it doesn't happen but we just have to prepare in advance so we're not caught off guard," he purported.
According to Dr. Dawes, the demands are unpredictable, so it is difficult to determine exactly how much blood is needed.
For this reason, the aim is to get as much intake as possible.
"You might say you are comfortable with 20 units of blood in the blood bank and that might serve you for your elective list or most emergency surgeries, but one shooting and you have two or three people coming in and you are completely wiped out," he explained.
