Second suspect charged in shooting death of cop at gas station

The Major Investigations Division (MID) has laid charges against a second suspect in connection with last year's fatal shooting of police corporal Christopher Smith during a robbery at a gas station off Beechwood Avenue in St. Andrew.

Thirty-two-year-old Dornell Allen, also called 'Nelly', a taxi operator of Westmore Gardens, Spanish Town, St. Catherine, has been charged with murder, conspiracy to murder, robbery with aggravation, unlawful possession of firearm and unauthorised possession of ammunition.

Investigators say Allen was charged after he was held in possession of the vehicle used to transport the gunmen who carried out the robbery.

Corporal Smith was fatally shot on December 6 when he drove into a gas station to purchase petrol.

He was attached to the Kingston Western Police Division.

Tremaine Harris, 23, one of the prime suspects in the incident, was captured on December 11 at Norman Manley International Airport while preparing to board a flight to the Bahamas.
