The National Workers Union (NWU) says one of the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) contract workers at the centre of a dispute with the light and power company is now a permanent employee.

The worker's change of status is effective March 1.

It followed discussions between JPS and the NWU at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.

According to the union, the dispute arose after the positions of 30 contract workers were not converted to permanent status despite an agreement in place for the conversion.

NWU General Secretary Granville Valentine told Radio Jamaica News that an agreement has been signed for five of the 30 workers to be placed on staff.

Mr. Valentine said conversion of contractors will continue in June and September this year, resulting in a total of 15 workers having that change of status.

"There is an outstanding matter, though, that we will be going back to the Ministry of Labour on Monday at 10 a.m. to further address and continue to discuss as it relates to the commencement and confirmation of the conversion of another 15 workers. This agreement that we have signed today would have dealt with a total of 15 workers and we will complete that process come Monday for the other 15 workers," he outlined.

Mr. Valentine said the remaining 15 contractors should be converted to permanent staff in the first quarter of 2025.
