Some Jamaican students leave Ukraine

Senator Kamina Johnson Smith

Eight Jamaican students have so far left Ukraine as the threat of conflict with Russia intensifies.

An additional five students will travel from Ukraine this week.

In an update on Wednesday, Minister of Foreign Affairs Senator Kamina Johnson Smith said the seven students who had requested assistance from the government to leave Ukraine, have decided against returning to Jamaica.

The offer was a loan for airfare.

"We understand that while some are making private arrangements to travel to other cities in the region, other countries, until the situation in Ukraine becomes more certain, others are still cautiously monitoring the situation as their assessment of their circumstances are that that can be accommodated," said the minister.

Senator Johnson Smith said the Jamaican Embassy in Berlin continues to urge the students that with tensions between Russia and Ukraine escalating, travel could become impossible.

"We note that there have been cancellations of flights between Ukraine and Germany. Several airlines have suspended their flights for the time period and this, of course, increases the complexity of travel if students still choose to try to return."

"We have shared the options available to them, for example through Turkey, which doesn't require a transit visa at this time, and we have highlighted our concern that travel might become even more challenging and might even become impossible if the airspace is closed, such that they should really take immediate action if they intend to leave," she reiterated.
