Tobago votes in House of Assembly elections

The people of Tobago have been voting on Monday in elections for the Tobago House of Assembly, in what analysts described as a straight fight between the ruling People's National Movement (PNM) and the Tobago People's Party (TPP).

Polling stations opened early Monday morning with both sides, urging supporters to turn out in large numbers as control of the island's legislative hangs in the balance.

Political analysts say the PNM is banking on a strong voter turnout to reclaim its assembly following its defeat four years ago,
while the TPP is seeking to hold on to power by consolidating support, particularly among younger voters.

The campaign has been dominated by issues such as economic development, jobs, crime and Tobago's relationship with the central government in Trinidad.

Polls closed at 6 p.m. local time or 5 p.m. Jamaica time, and counting should be underway.

Preliminary results are expected later on Monday night.
