Traffic deaths at alarming level

Dr Lucien Jones, Vice-Chair of the National Road Safety Council

Traffic deaths have reached a new high after the country recorded 163 road fatalities up to Friday May 17.

This surpasses the 161 deadly crashes recorded for the corresponding period last year.

The latest figure comes after Friday's early morning collision in St. James which claimed the life of a 47 year-old motorist.

Vice Chair of the National Road Safety Council Dr. Lucien Jones disclosed the rising number following a high-level meeting with Prime Minister Andrew Holness and other stakeholders who met on Thursday in an effort to stem the carnage on the country's roads.

Roads in St. James and St. Ann, having frequent collisions, will also be heavily targeted.

Dr. Jones added that external agencies will also be consulted as stakeholders work to create safer roads.

The government has been working to reduce road deaths by 50% by 2030.
