The Donald Trump administration would look at lowering tariffs on imported Chinese goods pending talks with Beijing, a source familiar to the matter said Wednesday, adding that any action would not be made unilaterally.
The sources' comments followed a Wall Street Journal report that the White House is considering cutting its tariffs on Chinese imports in a bid to de-escalate tensions.
The paper citing a White House official said China tariffs would come down from their current level of 145 per cent to between 50 and 65 per cent.
China has retaliated with 125 percent tariffs on US imports along with other measures.
President Trump told reporters today that the US is going to have a fair deal with China but did not address the specifics of the Journal report.
His remarks followed optimistic comments he made on Tuesday that a deal to lower tariffs was possible.
The White House spokesperson said any reports on tariffs were a pure speculation unless they came directly from Mr. Trump.
