The UK on Tuesday reported 50 COVID-19 deaths within 28 days of a positive test - the worst toll since early April as the government prepares to remove almost all restrictions in England from next week.
According to official data, an additional 36,660 cases were registered.
Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have been 154,000 deaths registered in the UK where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said the country will ease restrictions as planned on July 19.
