UTECH Students’ Union condemns attack on colleagues

The Students' Union of the University of Technology has condemned Saturday's attack on a group of students which left one dead and another hospitalised with gunshot wounds.

UTECH Student Union President, Vladimir Wallace, has expressed outrage at the shooting and blasted the new administration for its handling of the crime wave sweeping the country.

"We are upset and we are wondering what the government is going to do about it. The crime rate is spiraling out of control and we don't seem to see an adequate crime plan as to how they are actually going to tackle crime and violence. It doesn't matter what they achieve, if we are dead it would mean nothing to us," said Mr. Wallace.

He said the administration as well as the Opposition People's National Party must meet to find a solution to the crime crisis.

"What we want foremost is for the Government to work with the Opposition and to try to come up with some plan to resolve this crime situation because right now you have the Government refusing to meet with the Opposition and the Opposition refusing to meet with the Government because of some petty issues and people are dying,"

"Right now we would really like the Government to come out and address the nation and tell us what they plan to do about crime before 2008," he continued.

The Students' Union says it wants to see the government invest more in forensic science, address the lack of resources facing the force, publish pictures of persons who have committed heinous acts and hold a referendum on the death penalty.

21-year-old Diondra Morris was shot dead when a lone gunman opened fire on five UTECH students on Saturday in Papine, St. Andrew.

Another female student was hospitalised.

The students were attacked near their boarding house while returning from a fete.

The St. Andrew Central Police has since detained one suspect.

He is scheduled to face an identification parade.
