Forty eight
hours before the start of this year's hurricane season, the head of the
regional disaster agency said the Caribbean
must be on guard.
Coordinator of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA), Jeremy Collymore said while the region has made significant strides in disaster management over the past year, there is no reason to be complacent.
However, he is upbeat about the region's state of readiness with Barbados, Belize, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago working towards having fully functional radar systems by August.
"We are happy to say that a draft outline of that strategy is now available and has been the subject of extensive discussions among key sector shareholders among five countries in the Caribbean. Similarly, we have advanced efforts to establish standards for probability assessments in that sector," said Mr. Collymore.
