August weekend reserved for National Championships around the globe

The weekend of August 8 and 9 could be used by the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) to host the National Championships as World Athletics has set aside that weekend as a protected window for such events worldwide. The weekend has been established by World Athletics’ newly created Global Calendar Unit as one where no Diamond League or World Athletics Continental tour meetings are scheduled to be held this year.

It will enable national federations to hold their championships without clashing with any global meetings. World Athletics says it’s encouraging federations to hold their National Championships on this weekend if it is safe for athletes to compete. JAAA president, Dr Warren Blake, speaking on Hitz 92 FM’s Sports Grill recently, said it would be unlikely that the National Championships which is set for June 25-28 would go ahead as scheduled.

World Athletics says it is hoping to arrange an international competition season later in 2020 to assist athletes with their preparations for the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in July and August of 2021.

An announcement is expected near the end of the month on the rest of the 2020 season, including the Diamond League programme and Continental Tour meetings. World Athletics announced earlier this week that the Olympic qualification period would remain suspended until December 1, 2020, a decision that some athletes described as "disappointing".
