First St. Catherine T/20 tournament bowls off on January 23

The St. Catherine Cricket Association's first ever Twenty/20 Tournament to be sponsored by Sherwin Williams to the tune of $650,000 is set to bowl off on January 23.

The competition will be contested among 16 teams spread across four zones with individual and team cash prize and incentives up for grabs in each game.

Cherton daCosta, Association President, said some factors prevented more teams from entering the competitions.

"There is a problem with grounds. Because teams don’t think they have a proper (cricket) ground, they stay back, not wanting to enter the competition not being aware that we’re conducting the competition in zones, so they wouldn’t have to have a home ground. For us, it is a cost … we have a sponsor but we cannot go beyond what it will cost us to run a competition of this nature," he told RJR Sports.

Meanwhile, Paul Campbell, President of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA), is endorsing the tournament.

He says it will do a world of good for the sport.

"It will work wonders in terms of the growth and development of the sports at the community level in St. Catherine. It is a bold move, a historic moment and the JCA is extremely have to be part of this" said Campbell
