It was at the Kennington Oval in the summer of 1976 that Michael Holding took his best test haul of 14-142. It was pace like fire back then.
And on Friday's 2nd day of the 5th and final Ashes test between Australia and England at the same venue, you would not know that England have already wrapped up the series, because it was pace like fire from Australia's Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle, who discombobulated England at the Oval.
Australia continued to assert their dominance, by continuing from their overnight 3-287, and were led by Steven Smith who was 78 overnight and Adam Voges 47. Smith went on to score his 11th test ton, 143, and Voges 76. The two put on 146 for the 4th wicket, before Mitchell Starc defied the England bowlers at the tailend and cracked 58 as Australia compiled 481 all out.
Steve Finn took 3-90, Moeen Ali 3-102 and Ben Stokes 3-133.
England had no answer to the fiery pace of Marsh who took 3 quick wickets for 18, ripping through the heart of England's batting order, supported by Peter Siddle 2-18 and Mitchell Johnson 1-21. Off spinner Nathon Lyon has so far taken 2-32 and Starc 0-14 from 6 overs.
England still trail by 374 runs.
Scores after two days: Australia 481; England 107-8.
