Jamaica out boxed Panama by winning five of the six bouts on the Jamaica Boxing Board's “Gloves Over Guns” fight card last weekend at the Montego Bay Cricket Club. The highlight of the night saw national feather weight champion Sanji Williams taking charge of his opponent Jose Mejia from the moment referee Dwayne Wilson said "box".
But before anyone could get a good watch of the fight, the bout was over, as Williams, who will be contest the Olympic qualifier later this year in Argentina, knocked Mejia down a minute and 6 seconds into the first round.
Another Olympic hopeful, Trevor Thonson, who is also a national champion, was evenly matched with Ewardo Beckford who traded punches in three busy rounds. However, Thonson got the decision on the judges card as he won in a unanimous decision.
The most experienced boxer on the card with 60 wins and 18 losses was Jonathan Hanson who stepped up to the light heavy weight class. He was also in the win column by way of a split decision over Alberto Peralta. It was not an easy win for Hanson who put Peralta down twice in the third round.
