Jamaica ends 49th Carifta Games with record medal tally

Jamaica continued its dominance over the final day of competition to maintain its record of topping the medal table at every Carifta Games since 1985 as the curtain came down on the 49th staging at the National Stadium on Monday.

Jamaica ended with a record total of 92 medals, comprising 45 gold, 29 silver and 18 bronze, bettering the previous best of 89 medals the country won at the 2019 staging, the last time the meet was held before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

On the final day of competition, Jamaica swept all the mile relay events and also dominated the sprint hurdles, winning three of the four finals. Elsewhere, Rickoy Hunter took gold in the Under-17 boys 200m 22.13 ahead of compatriot Marcinho Rose 22.26.

A day after helping Jamaica to a World Under-20 sprint relay record, Brianna Lyston 23.16 seconds, mined gold in the  Under- 20 200 metres ahead of fellow Jamaican Kaylia Kelly who was third in 24.33.

Brian Levell won the boy's section, clocking 21.18 in a strong headwind ahead of compatriot Sandrey Davison 21.35 who took silver.

J'Voughnn Blake followed up his 1500 metre triumph by taking the Under-20 boys 800 metres in 1 minute, 49.89 seconds.

Meanwhile, the British Virgin Islands protoje Adaejah Hodge who grabbed her third gold medal of the meet after clocking 23.42 to win the Under-17 girls 200 metres, won the Austin Sealy Award for being the Most Outstanding Performer over the three days of competition. 

She also captured the Under-17 girls 100m in a record time of 11.29 seconds and the Under-17 girls long jump with a leap of 6.20 metres.
