Jamaica misses out of table tennis qualification for Tokyo Olympics

Jamaica will miss out on competing in table tennis at the Olympics in Tokyo this summer for the sixth straight time after both of the nation's representatives Simon Tomlinson and Kane Watson were sent packing from the singles section of the 2021 Latin American qualification in Rosario, Argentina on Thursday.

Hopes of qualifying for this summer's games were dashed as
competing in the round of 16 section, Jamaica's top seed Tomlinson was beaten by four sets to one by Puerto Rico's Daniel Gonzalez 11-4, 11-8, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9.

Playing in the round of 32, Watson lost out to Guatemala's Hector Gatica also in five sets 11-9, 11-7, 8-11, 11-9, 11-3

Tomlinson and Watson were trying to join Garfield Jones from 1988, Michael Hyatt from 1992 and ‘96 as well as Stephen Hylton from 1996 as Jamaicans to compete at the Olympics in table tennis.

The top 2 from the first knockout phase automatically qualified for the games, while all others were  battling it out for the remaining two spots.
