Kaliese Spencer wins at Diamond League

Kaliese Spencer and Melaine Walker finished first and second in the 400m hurdles at the Lausanne diamond league meet on Thursday in Switzerland.  There was mixed results for Jamaicans at the meet.

Spencer won in a time of 53.49, a season’s best, getting the better of Melaine Walker, who also ran a season’s best 53.74.

The enigmatic former Olympic champion ran a sub par semifinals race at the recent London Olympics, and failed to defend the title she won in Beijing in 2008.  Newly crowned Olympic Champion Natalya Antyukh finished down in the line in seventh in a time of 55.82.

In the men’s 400m, Grenadian prodigy and Olympic champion Kirani James ran a blistering 44.37 to win the quarter mile event.  The lone Jamaican in that race Rusheen McDonald finished fourth in 45.34.

In the women's 100m, Olympic champion Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce, was edged for first place by American 100m Olympic silver medalist Carmelita Jeter.  Both women stopped the clock in 10.86, but it was a dip on the line by Jeter that seperated the two.  Olympic 100m bronze medalist Veronica Campbell Brown finished fourth in 10.99.  Trinidad's Kelly Ann Baptiste was third in 10.93 and the other Jamaican in the race, Kerron Stewart was fifth in 11.10.
