Derby winner, two time Superstakes, two time horse of the year and Confraternity Classic winner 'Miracle Man' has died.
‘Miracle Man’, who was 14 at the time of his death from colic on Thursday, has gone down as one of the great thoroughbreds to have been bred and raced locally.
As a 3-year-old, he won the Jamaica Derby, St Leger and Superstakes, narrowly missing the triple crown after finishing 2nd in the 2000 Guineas by a head.
He also missed the 3-year-old Caribbean Classic in Puerto Rico that same season in 2004, after being quarantined in Miami en route to Puerto Rico.
But in 2005, after dominating local racing, he arrived in time in Puerto Rico and duly won the grade-1 Confraternity Classic for 4-year-olds and upwards over 9-furlongs, becoming the first local bred horse to win an international race of stature.
‘Miracle Man’, who was foaled in 2002 by Law of The Sea out of Hya, sired winners of 30 races and $19.7 million in stakes, including Jamaica Oaks winner ‘Lady Abhijita’.
The tall chestnut horse won 17 races with career stakes of $20.46 million.
