Despite a 67-36 win over Scotland at the Netball World Cup in Liverpool, England on Wednesday, Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls are now out of contention for a semi-final spot at the tournament. Jhaniele Fowler led the way with 45 goals from 48 attempts for the Jamaicans.
The Sunshine Girls would have been in the semi-finals had England and South Africa lost their remaining two games, but they picked up wins on Wednesday which ended the Sunshine Girls’ hopes of a podium finish.
England defeated Trinidad and Tobago 72-46 while South Africa got the better of Uganda 67-40, to both grab semi-final spots. The number two ranked Jamaicans will now switch focus to fifth and sixth place placement matches.
This is the first time since 1995 that Jamaica has missed out on a spot in the semi-finals. Co-incidentally that tournament was also hosted in England. The Sunshine Girls will play Uganda on Thursday at noon Jamaica time.
